AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

NeighbourLink launched a brand-new After-School Program that participating youth named The Learning Club! The Learning Club is designed for all school-aged youth residing in Toronto Community Housing, offering dynamic and engaging activities to expand our impact in the community.

Our program runs every Monday and Tuesday, providing a safe, supportive space for local youth. With the help of our amazing new staff member, Shannon, who will work alongside me, we’re creating an environment where kids can thrive.

The program includes:
- Homework help
- Life skills workshops
- Arts and crafts
- Games and activities
- Healthy snacks
- Volunteer hour opportunities for high schoolers

These programs are more than just activities—they’re a place where young people can build relationships, develop skills, and feel supported. With the addition of a female Youth Coordinator to our team, we can offer even more one-on-one support to help youth succeed. The bond that she has been able to forge with them (especially our girls) in such a short amount of time has been inspiring to see.

We’re also continuing our partnerships with The Salvation Army and The Peoples Church to ensure engaging programming throughout the week. On Thursday evening, we take youth ages 6-12 to a program called Game on and Groove on where they can play games, receive music lessons, and connect with peers. On Fridays, middle and high school students join us at The Peoples Church for arts and crafts, basketball, video games, pizza, and most importantly mentorship from inspiring leaders.

The drop-in basketball program is tailor-made for the older boys in our community. More than just basketball, it provided a safe space for over 45 young men to indulge in their passion. The courts were filled with laughter, music, food, and relationship-building as we brought in community resources. For the first time, our Youth Programs Coordinator, Jordan, also brought players to friendly basketball tournaments in other communities to show their skills and make new friends.

Our Summer Camp for under-resourced youth ages 6-12, unfolds three times a week all summer long. It featuring an array of activities and field trips to places like the AGO. From tie-dye to artistic adventures, self-care workshops to boxing classes — our summer was nothing short of amazing.

Some youth have participated in the summer camp for three years and have formed strong relationships with our leaders and other youth. Whether they’re returned or joined us for the first time, the children developed confidence and leadership skills. Parents have expressed gratitude for this free program that allows them to continue working over the summer.

BASKETBALL DROP-IN REFLECTIONS

"In the first couple of weeks, we've seen the positive impact of our program. Some of the children we've had the privilege of working with have stepped out of their comfort zone. We've had kids that were reluctant to tell us their name on the first day who are now sprinting to come and see us.

The typical day consists of a shoot-around period where the youth can get some shots up before programming. We then have a period of life skills where we emphasize topics such as leadership, mental well-being, motivation, and community safety." (Continue Reading Here)

- Jordan, Youth Program Coordinator

"While every child in our art camp is unique in their own way. If I could describe them all in one word... I'd say they're IMAGINATIVE! These kids are full of energy and creativity and are just craving an artistic outlet.

For me, the memorable moments are when I get to check in on each participant and explore their interests through the art medium they're using that day. I've discovered that these girls have many gifts and potential to pursue artistic pathways. What is memorable for me is having the opportunity to nurture these children's talents"
